Northwest insurance firms merge

Expanding industrial opportunity in northwestern Ontario was the impetus for the merger of Thunder Bay Insurance and Gillons' Insurance of Fort Frances.

Expanding industrial opportunity in northwestern Ontario was the impetus for the merger of Thunder Bay Insurance and Gillons' Insurance of Fort Frances.

In an April 26 release, the firms say they are creating the largest independently owned insurance brokerage in northwestern Ontario.

David Baxter of Thunder Bay Insurance said the merger provides their clients with an expanded line of insurance options. “The merger also provides a strong increase in our expansion in the Ring of Fire, construction and bonding, First Nations, mining, power generation and medical research fields.”

Duane Cridland of Gillions' Insurance said the merger builds capacity and brings together specialization in insuring both recreational and industrial assets.

“Our two companies have known each other for many years and to join forces made perfect sense (to) provide a stronger platform to service the growing needs of economic development in the North.”

The new firm will have nine offices and more than 100 staff.
