The province has accepted the closure plan for Northgate Minerals' Young-Davidson mine 60 kilometres west of Kirkland Lake, allowing the company to begin construction and development.

The Young-Davidson mine is expected to produce an average of 180,000 ounces of gold per year over a 15-year life, beginning in 2012.

Construction of the mine's main process building will begin in early August, while the mill is due to be enclosed by the end of the year to allow for work on the process plant to continue through the winter.

Also due to begin in late summer are the deepening of the existing shaft, construction of the tailings impoundment area, and the realignment of Highway 566.

More than $140 million in mine development contracts have already been awarded, including the engineering, procurement, and construction management, as well as shaft deepening and raise boring.
