The $1-billion federal Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program is opening up investment to 24 forestry firms across Canada, including three operating out of Northern Ontario.

The program rewards forestry firms for the production of so-called "black liquor," a chemical by-product of the pulping process which can be used to generate renewable heat and power.

With mills in Dryden and Espanola, Domtar is eligible for $143.5 million in credits. Also included are Terrace Bay Pulp, eligible for $19.2-million in credits; and AbitibiBowater, eligible for $33.2-million in credits through its Fort Frances and Thunder Bay mills.

These companies must now apply for project funding for individual facilities, with each one being subject to a federal environmental assessment.

Eligible firms will receive funding in late 2009 or early 2010. Credits can be invested in any of a company's pulp and paper facilities across Canada.
