North Bay is one of two Canadian cities in the running to land the assembly plant for a U.S. seaplane company.

Dornier Seaplane announced Oct. 19 that the northeastern Ontario city is competing with St.-Jean-sur-Richielieu, Quebec (a Montreal suburb) on a short list to be a final assembly site for its amphibious aircraft.

The company said a final decision will be made in 90 days.

The announcement was made prior to the start of the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA) Annual Meeting and Convention in Orlando, Fla.

The company's engineering division is in Germany, but its winter flight headquarters are based in Punta Gorda, Fla.

It's a three generation family-owned company with a history stretching back to the mid-1910s of building single engine seaplanes and massive multi-engine 'flying boats.'
