Nipissing First Nation has opened a new federally regulated fish processing plant near North Bay.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund provided $70,000 to the plant which will provide locally caught whitefish and walleye to area restaurants and businesses.
The new facility will also work with the Ministry of Natural Resources to improve the collection of fish harvest data.
“All of the fish processed will have been sustainably harvested with the environment in mind, that's our main goal, fish now and fish for the future,” said Chief Marianna Couchie in a statement.
The plant will process 37,000 pounds of fish, or 80 per cent of the First Nation's annual catch, within five years.
