The province has announced the expansion of Highway 69 to four lanes will continue, with an 11 km section between Highway 607 and Highway 64 earmarked for the next stage of construction.
The work, awarded to Teranorth Construction and Engineer of Sudbury, is anticipated to create up to 600 jobs. The contract is worth $61.3 million.
"Since 2005, our government has invested significantly in expansion projects that are making Sudbury's dream of a four-laned highway a reality,” Rick Bartolucci, MPP for Sudbury and minister of northern development and mines, said in a news release. “An expanded Highway 69 will be a modern road that will provide residents and industry with a safer, more efficient drive as well as promoting economic development in the region."
Work on the section of highway began in June and is expected to be complete by 2015.
A contract for the expansion of another section of Highway 69 south of Sudbury will be awarded later this summer, and an ongoing expansion project on Highway 69 south of Estaire is scheduled for completion later this year.
