A strategic planning meeting between the Timmins Chamber of Commerce's new board and Fred Gibbons, its new president, has resulted in the creation of five priorities for the coming year.
These include help for the mining-sector manufacturers, especially for rising energy costs. Other priorities range from the growth and promotion of Timmins as a regional centre, to advocating for business support programs for expansion, diversification and value-added manufacturing opportunities.
The chamber will also advocate for better access to education, including licensing for foreign-trained professionals, and improving access to English-language university programs.
Municipal transparency and accountability is also a focus, particularly for the tax burden on businesses and debt accumulation.
Gibbons, who also serves as president of Northern College, took over on Sept. 1 from outgoing Chamber president Rob Galloway.
