New mining man of excellence

Industry veteran Doug Morrison has been named the new president and CEO of the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) in Sudbury.

Industry veteran Doug Morrison has been named the new president and CEO of the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) in Sudbury.

Morrison, who's worked at Falconbridge, Inco and at Golder Associates as Global Mining Leader, starts the new job on March 1.

He replaces Peter Kaiser, who's led CEMI for five years, but will remain with CEMI as an advisor and as a director of the institute's Rio Tinto Centre for Underground Mine Construction.

The decision was made by CEMI's board of directors on Feb. 8. The news was released Feb. 22.

In a press release, Morrison said he intends to “engage with the best scientists and engineers the academic community has to offer” to turn ideas into solutions for the industry.

Morrison said CEMI's main area of research remains deep mining and underground mine engineering, but they also intend to branch out into aspects of study surrounding environmental and social impacts which are now an industry “pre-requisite” in permitting and mine closure plans.
