The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has given MiningWatch Canada and the Ontario Coalition of Aboriginal People $13,800 to participate in the federal environmental assessment of Cliffs Natural Resoures' chromite project in the Ring of Fire.

The agency's funding is intended to support public participation in upcoming steps of the comprehensive study process, including the review of the comprehensive study report.

Cliffs plans to build, operate and eventually decommission an open pit and underground chromite mine for the next 30 years in the James Bay lowlands. The proposed mine will process between 6,000 and 12,000 tonnes of ore each day.

The proposal includes a north-south permanent road and a ferrochrome production plant, the latter would be built in another location.
