The Mining Industry Human Resources Council has completed a study forecasting employment needs in Ontario's mining industry over the next two, five and ten years, indicating "massive hiring requirements" by 2018.
The report's "pessimistic" scenario projects a need for 5,578 more mining industry workers by 2018, while the "optimistic" scenario projects a need for 17,004 such jobs.
The report also breaks down the hiring requirements by sector. It outlines the need for 2,744 more underground production and development miners, 1,178 more heavy-duty industrial mechanics and millwrights, 972 more heavy equipment operators, and 848 more mining and quarrying supervisors by 2018.
