The Ontario government has intervened to resume search operations at a collapsed Elliot Lake mall by involving Northern Ontario's mining community.
In a June 26 release, the Ontario government said more personnel and equipment are rushing to the scene.
After the Toronto Heavy Urban Search and Rescue called off the search this week for trapped victims in favour of demolition, citing the building's structural instability, Premier Dalton McGuinty has stepped in to co-ordinate rescue efforts.
Robots designed for mine rescue operations, equipped with cameras and sound equipment, are on their way to the northeastern Ontario community, and engineers from Vale are on stand-by.
A large specialized crane and other heavy equipment is arriving from Priestlay Demolition, an urban search and rescue team from Manitoba is also on stand-by, and the Canadian military have offered their support.
“We have taken this step in an effort to support the outstanding efforts of those emergency responders of those emergency responders and agencies already on site,” said Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Madeleine Meilleur in a statement.
