A medical technology company is moving into a heritage landmark that Thunder Bay's economic development department wants to convert into an high-tech hub.
Tornado Medical Systems is moving into the city-owned Whelan Building on Cumberland Street in Thunder Bay's north end. Occupancy is expected by early next year.
Tornado is a medical imaging technology company working in partnership with the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.
Steve Demmings, CEO of the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), said the company's move from its Munro Street headquarters to the Whalen is major catalyst toward establishing the building as the “home for high end, professional employment in the ICT sector.”
City officials hope the move is the first of many high end professional and ICT tenants over the next three to four years.
Northern Development, Mines and Forestry Minister Michael Gravelle said the $1 million from Northern Ontario Heritage Fund commitment for building renovations will help “attract new economic activity and revitalize the downtown north core.”
The 97-year-old edifice has undergone major renovations in recent years as part of an urban renewal strategy that ties in with city's nearby waterfront redevelopment.
