Stantec-Mining and the McIntosh Engineering Scholarship Fund have donated $83,000 to Laurentian University's School of Engineering, paving the way for additional scholarships and equipment purchases.
The gift will provide 14 engineering scholarships worth $2,800, to be awarded annually. The money will also be used to purchase additional materials such as the Mine 2-4D planning and scheduling software system, used by engineers to determine the financial impact of different mine plans.
In recent years, Laurentian University's School of Engineering has experienced heightened enrolment, reaching from 100 students in 2005 to 250 in 2008. More increases are expected in 2009.
After Stantec purchased the company, former president of McIntosh Engineering, Scott McIntosh, donated $2 million in the United States and Canada to promote the mining industry. This included $250,000 equally split across Laurentian University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal.
