Laurentian University’s lunabot-building team placed seventh in the NASA Lunabotics Competition, held May 21-26 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Laurentian earned 419 points for its efforts.
The contest requires students to design and build a remote-operated device that can dig and deposit at least 10 kilograms of simulated lunar material within an allotted time. The students faced a new challenge this year, with fully autonomous lunabots scoring extra points.
Last year, Laurentian’s team of fourth-year mechanical engineering students placed first out of 40 contenders in the international competition.
First place in this year’s contest went to Iowa State University, which earned 1,191 points; second place was awarded to the University of Alabama, which earned 919.5 points; and third place went to John Brown University, which earned 870 points.
