Thunder Bay's Lakehead University will expand in a location more than 1,000 km away on June 11 when it starts construction on a new campus in Orillia.
The $45-million construction project includes the first three buildings on the new campus at the western limits of the City of Orillia. By September, 2010, Lakehead Orillia will have an 80,000-square-foot academic building, able to accommodate up to 1,200 students in addition to the original campus location in the city's downtown core, which has a capacity of 500 students.
"Lakehead Orillia will be able to help meet the demand for post-secondary education in Simcoe County and the Greater Toronto Area and it provides the City of Orillia and Simcoe County with a resource that will have long-term economic and social impacts," says Orillia dean Kim Fedderson.
