The Town of Kirkland Lake is in agreement with the southern Ontario Town of Innisfil in its efforts to make the harmonized sales tax not include electricity sales.
The harmonized tax would increase electricity rates by eight per cent across the province when it is implemented, July 1, 2010.
Kirkland Lake, which already has taxes that rank among the highest in Ontario, passed the motion July 21 to support Innisfil's petition to eliminate electricity sales from the tax. They are presenting it to the provincial government.
The Kirkland Lake motion stated that the Ontario Hydro's debt retirement charge of 0.7 cents per kilowatt hour is already being paid and adding an additional eight per cent would be “double taxation,” making it difficult for residents and business of Ontario.
