Killarney wharf gets support from feds

The Municipality of Killarney will construct a new fish-processing plant at its waterfront thanks to $320,000 in funding from FedNor.

The funding matches an earlier contribution of $320,000 to the project by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC). The money will be used to build a new 2,244-square-foot fish-processing plant, which will replace the existing plant, which was built prior to 1905.

“The construction of a modern fish-processing facility at the local wharf will enable the Municipality of Killarney to take full advantage of one of the area’s top economic drivers,” FedNor Minister Tony Clement said in a news release.

Killarney Mayor Morgan Pitfield said the investment will help create jobs and “strengthen the economic foundation of the Killarney region.”

“Creating commercial waterfront opportunities is a proven economic driver for our region, and I look forward to the positive results this funding will deliver for the people and businesses throughout the area,” he said.
