The Municipality of Killarney, located southwest of Sudbury, has received funding to upgrade its wharf.

The Ontario government has provided $320,000 in funding through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) to rebuild the municipal wharf facility, which is leased to Herbert Fisheries. The investment will allow the fishery to expand its restaurant and fish-processing plant, while retaining 20 seasonal jobs and creating up to 12 new jobs.

Funding comes under the NOHFC's Infastructure and Community Development Program, which aims to assist northern and rural communities in enhancing its competitiveness and creating economic development opportunities.

Preference is given to projects that impact communities that are based around resources such as forestry, agriculture, fisheries, mining and energy.

“Helping northern communities make the infrastructure improvements they need to protect and

create local jobs and to support local businesses is one of our government’s priorities,” Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci said in a news release.

Herbert Fisheries has been in business for more than 25 years. It ships fresh, frozen and smoked fish to a variety of markets in Ontario and the United States and additionally operates a fish-and-chip restaurant on the Killarney waterfront.
