Since 2006, Spacek has served as mayor of Kapuskasing, where he was born and raised, and has since served as a vocal proponent of economic development at local and regional levels.
He currently serves as director of both the Northern Mayors' Action Group and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. He also sits on the Ministry of Transportation's Air Advisory Panel.
Previously, he served as director of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and on the executive of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Spacek replaces outgoing president Mac Bain.
At the July 16 meeting,
Lou Turco, councillor with the City of Sault Ste. Marie, was named to
the position of 1st vice-president, while Timmins mayor
Tom Laughren was named 2nd vice-president.
The membership of FONOM consists of 111 municipalities, towns and cities across northeastern Ontario. The organization advocates for political and economic issues for the North.
