Cargo North, an investment group spearheaded by aviation pioneer Frank Kelner of Thunder Bay, has acquired a heavy lift aircraft to start servicing northwestern Ontario.

In a July 12 release, the group will take possession of a Basler Turbo (BT) 67 aircraft and expect to have it in service by Nov. 1.

The aircraft has a beefed-up airframe, state-of-the-art instrumentation, a cargo capacity of 1,225 cubic feet, and a payload of 11,000 pounds to haul cargo such as bulk fuel and drum fuel.

Cargo North has obtained options to acquire two more BT-67 aircraft.

In the process, Cargo North has formed an alliance with Nakina Air Service and North Star Air of Pickle Lake.

Kelner is well-known in Northern Ontario aviation circles with an accumulated 27,000 flight hours and experience with light jets, turboprops and a lifetime spent in the air cargo business.
