Hatch Sudbury draws global mine engineering work to town

With the slowdown of local mining activity, Hatch's Sudbury office has sought to service companies further afield, with success coming in the form of a trio of new major mining contracts both at home and abroad.

With the slowdown of local mining activity, Hatch's Sudbury office has sought to service companies further afield, with success coming in the form of a trio of new major mining contracts both at home and abroad.

The Sudbury staff of the engineering giant, whose global corporate office is in Mississauga, is now working on .potash projects in Saskatoon for BHP Billiton, and in Russia for EuroChem.

The company is also working on a potential new gold mine in the rainforests of Ecuador for Kinross, which requires the engineering of surface roads, infrastructure, the processing plant and the underground mine itself.

Housing 150 of its 8,000-strong global workforce, Hatch's Sudbury offices also feature the company's Centre of Excellence in Underground Mining. There, it services its global mining client base in conjunction with its Johannesburg office.

The local mining team features experts in a variety of mine-related disciplines, including mine design, shaft and hoist design, mineral processing, ventilation, heating and cooling, and underground communications.
