Kenora-Rainy River NDP MPP Howard Hampton continues to place heat on the McGuinty government over its $25 million loan to the Buchanan Group of Companies to prop up and restart its Terrace Bay pulp mill.

The company filed for creditor protection last March.

Hampton believes the funding should be conditional on laid off workers at other Buchanan operations, unpaid contractors and suppliers receiving the money they are owed.

During the Nov. 23 Question Period at Queen's Park, Hampton said the Buchanan Group owes dozens of contractors in Geraldton, Manitouwadge, Nipigon and Armstrong “hundreds of thousands of dollars for contractors they have completed.”

He said the loan puts the total amount of government money given to the company at more than $100 million.

“Is the McGuinty government prepared to do anything for the thousands of laid-off workers and the dozens of contractors who can't get paid?”
