After years of preparation, the long-awaited ground-breaking for Cambrian College's $5-million Xstrata Nickel Sustainable Energy Centre took place at the Sudbury campus on August 5.

The 16,400-square-foot location will allow for applied research and teaching with a focus on green building and renewable energy.

The design of the facility includes a number of eco-friendly components, such as a high-performance building envelope, ventilation heat recovery, and low-flow water fixtures.

The centre received $2 million in support from Xstrata Nickel in 2007, with other funding has been provided by FedNor and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

The main facility will be supplemented by a series of six “living labs,”which will act as outlets for education as well as research for students and entrepreneurs alike. Three such labs have been operational since fall 2009.
