Funds set up to assist Algo Centre Mall collapse

Funds are being set up to assist people affected by the roof collapse at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.

Funds are being set up to assist people affected by the roof collapse at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.

Northern Credit Union in Elliot Lake announced it has set up the Elliot Lake Relief Fund, which will be used to assist with community relief efforts. The credit union has contributed an initial $5,000.

“This is a devastating event for everyone in the community of Elliot Lake and our thoughts are with them,” Northern Credit Union CEO Al Suraci said in a news release. “The mall is a major employer in Elliot Lake and many people and businesses will be affected for some time. It is at times like these that coming together in a co-operative effort can make an important difference.”

Donations will be accepted at any branch of the Northern Credit Union. A list of locations can be found at www.northerncu.com.

United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts followed suit, announcing it would offer $10,000 in financial assistance to United Way Sault Ste. Marie to help the community.

“We may represent different communities, but we are neighbours and friends,” executive director Michael Cullen said in a release. “So offering this assistance was the least we could do to help Elliot Lake’s residents in need.”

He urged corporate partners, friends, agencies and donors to make donations to the fund, and said the agency would accept donations, which would be forwarded to the Community Assistance Trust program for Elliot Lake.

Donations can be made by contacting Michael Cullen at edirector@unitedwaysudbury.com or 705-929-9892, or Katina Matheson at communitycoordinator@unitedwaynipissing.com or 705-845-6506.
