The Municipality of French River has received federal funding that will allow it to explore economic development opportunities in the community, located just south of Sudbury.
FedNor has granted the municipality $21,825 in funding through its Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports initiatives that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
“Sound planning is at the core of any successful community economic development efforts,” FedNor Minister Tony Clement said in a news release. “This investment will help municipal and business leaders identify and pursue opportunities for private-sector investment and job creation in the French River area.”
The funding will allow French River to develop a community-based economic development plan with a five-year outlook. That includes community consultations across the region; the development of a list of commercial development opportunities for various sectors such as tourism, forestry, agriculture and retail; and an assessment of the potential for the development of an industrial park.
“We are proud to partner with the government of Canada and FedNor to strengthen the local economy and position the Municipality of French River as open for business,” French River Mayor Claude Bouffard said in the release. “By developing a comprehensive strategic plan for our community, we are helping to create viable business opportunities and paving the way for the long-term economic success of this region.”
