Highway 11 south of North Bay will be fully operational as a four-lane freeway by fall 2012.
A $32.9-million contract to finish the final leg between North Bay and Huntsville was awarded to Aecon Construction of Toronto by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
Under the contract work, Aecon will complete a four-lane 24.2-kilometre expansion between Sundridge and South River.
Work on the bypass includes grading, drainage, lighting and paving. Construction has begun and will be complete by September 2011.
The existing two-lane highway will also be improved and become part of Highway 124 once the bypass opens.
About 230 jobs will be created with this project.
In the last 10 years, Aecon has completed five major projects on Highway 11 for the MTO valued at more than $175 million, with three as a joint venture partner with Leo Alarie and Sons of Timmins.
Teranorth Construction and Engineering of Sudbury is working on a $44.8-million contract to twin another section of Highway 11 near Burk's Falls.
