Former United Steelworkers union leader Terry Mancini, 87, died July 3 in his Mississauga nursing home after a brief illness, just 10 days before his 88th birthday.
During his time as union leader, Mancini championed the rights of workers in the areas of health and safety and pensions in Sudbury, Elliot Lake and other Northern Ontario mining towns. He was later recruited by the Ontario Department of Labour where he worked as a mediator in several high-profile negotiations.
His achievements in labour were recognized by Laurentian University, which bestowed him with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1986.
