Kirkland Lake Gold could restart operations as early as May 31 after spring forest fires damaged the power line feeding its mill and three-shaft mine complex in northeastern Ontario.
In a May 23 release, the company reports it's using the downtime to finish maintenance and other work where normally an electric shutdown is required.
Pushed up on the schedule is maintenance work to the main hoist that would require a three-day shutdown.
In a statement, company CEO Brian Hinchcliffe extended thanks to his employees “for their understanding and flexibility during this time, as well as the Ontario Provincial Police and MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) and town firefighting crews for their responsiveness and excellent job keeping everyone safe. We also extend thanks and appreciation to Hydro One for working with us to restore power in a timely fashion.”
The fire caused no injuries to the company's workforce and did not damage any property.
