The Ontario government is delivering $25,000 to the Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation near Kenora to explore opportunities in the granite manufacturing sector.
With assistance from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the First Nation will study the potential for a new gang saw granite fabrication plant. The plants process natural granite supply blocks from quarries into saleable commodities primarily for the building construction industry.
The feasibility study will be completed by Sept. 2009. Some benefits would include 50 new jobs.
The First Nation, also known as Rat Portage First Nation, in located on the shores of the Lake of the Woods.
