Sault Ste. Marie is dipping its toe into the movie production business.

DViant Films of Toronto is shooting a film in the Sault this fall and will come to town with a budget of $2 million for a dark comedy film called Longfellow. Shooting starts between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15 with pre-production beginning a month earlier.

Rosalie Graham, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie's meetings and conventions co-ordinator, told members of the Sault's Economic Development Corporation's board of directors, Oct. 5 that the local impact will be significant.

About $800,000 will be generated in local spinoffs with hotel accommodations, hiring 25 temporary crew and with other technical services.

Graham said DViant is one of two film companies she's been dealing with. She met the production companies during a Music Film in Motion meet-the-producers day at a conference in Sudbury.

The Sault has been a shooting location for two other films in recent years, but she would like to see more.

In the last two fiscal years, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund has invested $7.5 million toward film production in the region.
