Twenty First Nation communities in Ontario are receiving $14 million for housing on reserves through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
Moose Cree First Nation received $3.4 million for new construction and home retrofits. Lac Seul First Nation received $2.2 million, and Constance Lake collected $1 million.
Kenora MP Greg Rickford made the announcement June 22 on behalf of Diane Finley, the minister responsible for CMHC.
The federal funding is earmarked to build new housing, repair and "remediate" non-profit housing offered by CMHC.
In a statement, Rickford said he was pleased with the funding since he began his career as a nurse and spent time in many isolated First Nations communities in Ontario.
"Our government's investment is crucial not only to address overcrowding, but to allow communities to tackle many of the social challenges and health issues that accompany it," said Rickford in a statement.
