From Red Lake to Sudbury, Northern ridings have seen a flurry of federal dollars following a whirlwind tour by Tony Clement, the federal minister of Industry and in charge of FedNor.

The Kenora and Red Lake region was the recipient of $710,000, half of which went to support the Chukuni Communities Development Corporation. Another major beneficiary was Matawa First Nations Management, whose $216,032 will go towards hiring a mining advisor to help its nine member communities capitalize on mining opportunities.

The Rainy River, Thunder Bay and Superior East regions saw a combined total of $967,500 in FedNor funding, $500,000 of which was given to the township of Red Rock to help build a waterfront centre at its marina. Thunder Bay Ventures, a not-for-profit community futures development corporation (CFDC), received $225,000 in support. Another $192,500 was doled out for youth initiatives.

Nearly $2 million was handed out in the Greater Sudbury area, the lion's share of which went to the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT). With $1.4 million in hand, NORCAT will expand its 60,000-square-foot technology, training and business incubation facility. Science North, meanwhile, was handed $396,950 to develop and implement a science and technology outreach education program.

The Nipissing-Temiskaming region saw similar totals, with $1.8 million in FedNor funding flowing to the area. The bulk went to the City of North Bay, which saw $1.5 million to complete the infrastructure requirements needed for the final phase of its waterfront development initiative. Another $130,000 was given to the South Temiskaming CFDC to support the activities of its Northern Lights Regional Food Group.
