FedNor unleashed a flurry of funding announcements for Northern Ontario on Dec. 16, with $9.5 million worth of projects split between economic development agencies and regional projects.
Nearly half that total -- $4 million -- is being showered on the Thunder Bay region, including $2 million for the first phase of city's waterfront development at Marina Park.
The Greater Sudbury region received $1.5 million, including $451,000 to assist with the planning and development of the new Northern Ontario School of Architecture.
The region of Kenora is set to receive $1.2 million, with $500,000 set aside for the extension of water, sewer and utility services for a new highway commercial development for the Municipality of Red Lake.
The Nipissing-Timiskaming region will receive $1.4 million, including $454,940 in continued funding for Ontario Wood WORKS! Program
Sault Ste. Marie is tabbed to receive $555,000, primarily for the third phase of its downtown development initiative.
The Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing region received $430,000, with the lion's share of $320,000 going to the Nord-Aski Regional Economic Development Centre. Similarly, the Serpent River First Nation received $56,100 to establish a new economic development corporation of their own.
