Essar close to strike deadline with supervisors union

Essar Algoma Steel reached a new collective agreement with one union, but is down to the final hours of bargaining with another.

Members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2251, representing hourly workers, voted 83 per cent in favour of a new three-year deal.

In a company release, Essar said the deal is “fair to our employees while recognizing the realities of the steel market.”

On the flip side, Essar was facing an Aug. 1 strike deadline with USW Local 2724, the union representing technical, professional and management employees.

On Essar's blog site, the company's chief negotiator Jim Rennie was not optimistic a deal could be reached.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that we will not reach a collective agreement and will face a labour disruption...”
