Provincial Energy Minister Chris Bentley visited Sault College Feb. 2 for an introduction to the school's Renewable Energy and Green Construction Techniques program.

As part of the tour, which included Sault MPP David Orazietti, Sault College instructor Kieran O'Neill demonstrated how shade analysis programming works to calculate production numbers on a solar PV installation site. Rob McTaggart, who is the co-ordinator of the electrical programs at Sault College, explained the Brookfield Renewable Energy Training Centre component of the program.

“At Sault College we believe that the green economy requires a skilled and ready labour force that can effectively transition into emerging sectors,” college president Ron Common said in a news release. “The rising demand for environmentally friendly approaches is inspiring the creation of a growing number of green jobs in Ontario. The training we deliver at Sault College prepares our graduates to be successful in this emerging sector.”

Graduates of the program will be qualified to assist with feasibility assessments, renewable energy system installations, and green construction and renovation. Also linked to the renewable energy sectors is Sault College's electrical engineering technology program and its electrical engineering technician programs.

“Together, we are moving forward with our plan to build a modern, clean, reliable electricity system that Ontarians can count on,” Bentley said in the release. “We’re eliminating coal-fired electricity generation for cleaner air, we’re creating jobs for our families today, and training Ontarians for the high-skilled jobs of tomorrow in our clean energy sector. This is the foundation for a strong economy.”
