Control of the Algo Centre Mall has been transferred to the property owner, Eastwood Mall Inc., and insurance carrier Zurich Insurance Group Inc. following the collection of evidence by the Ministry of Labour.

The ministry is undergoing an investigation into the partial collapse of the mall’s roof on June 23. Two women were killed and more than 20 people were injured when a portion of the roof fell through two floors.

Cleanup at the site has been underway for weeks, and access into the mall is restricted due to ministry and Building Code orders issued by the City of Elliot Lake.

The property owner is required to develop a plan to stabilize the structure. This plan will be approved by the ministry before the owner can access the building and conduct a structural evaluation.

In addition to the public inquiry, there is a $30-million class-action lawsuit against Eastwood Mall Inc., the city and an engineering firm, as well as an investigation by the coroner’s office and an OPP criminal investigation.
