Conservative and Liberal MPs sold out Northern Ontario on HST: NDP

Federal New Democrat MPs say Conservative and Liberal MPs sold out the people of Northern Ontario by standing up and voting in support of the Harper government's $4.

Federal New Democrat MPs say Conservative and Liberal MPs sold out the people of Northern Ontario by standing up and voting in support of the Harper government's $4.3-billion federal payment, which enables the implementation of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in Ontario.

"I've heard from hundreds of consumers and small business owners in Nickel Belt that they are opposed to the HST," said Nickel Beld NDP MP Claude Gravelle. "Now is not the time to increase taxes, especially here in Northern Ontario where we have been especially hit hard by the recession.

"These Conservative and Liberal MPs from Northern Ontario, Greg Rickford (Kenora), Anthony Rota (Nipissing-Timiskaming) and Tony Clement (Parry Sound- Muskoka) have turned their backs on their communities today and voted to support the HST which will raise the price of gas, firewood, hydro, home heating oil and propane, snow removal, hockey registration, internet and cable by eight per cent."

Both the Provincial and Federal NDP caucuses have opposed any measure to bring in the HST across Ontario.
