The Conference Board of Canada is forecasting solid economic growth for Thunder Bay and Sudbury.

In its Metropolitan Outlook, the board reports Sudbury will experience gains in the manufacturing and construction sector which will help Sudbury's GDP expand by 2.2 per cent in 2012.

Thunder Bay's economy will expand by 1.9 per cent this year, based on, what the Conference Board calls, the “goods sector strength.”

The board said the Waterloo region will lead the country in growth among mid-sized cities at 3.3 per cent due to its manufacturing sector. The forecast was released just days before BlackBerry maker Research in Motion announced it was laying off 5,000 employees over the next three quarters.
