Two major industry unions are exploring the possibility of merging by mid-2013.
Union executives from the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP) confirmed they have held preliminary discussions to consider creating a new union.
The two boards have approved a “process protocol” which sets out the terms and a timeline for representatives to explore the issues related to dues and finances, representative structures, and regional issues.
CAW national president Ken Lewenza said events like the Caterpillar lockout “have made it increasingly obvious that Canadian workers need a stronger, more active, and more innovative labour movement to defend them.”
CEP president Dave Coles said this stronger Canadian union will create a better future for workers. “We are examining every aspect of our work as trade unions, from organizing to bargaining to political activism.”
A feasibility report is expected as early as August.
