Sudbury’s Cambrian College is introducing a new course this fall that will focus on skills in carpentry.
The carpentry renovation techniques program is based on the carpentry general program and will appeal to those seeking to earn credentials, upgrade their skills or advance their careers in the renovation industry.
“Over the past five years, thousands of people have applied to Ontario college programs in the field of construction and renovation, and that demand is expected to continue,” college president Sylvia Barnard said in a news release. “However, our research shows that prospective students are not leaving Cambrian’s traditional Northern Ontario catchment area to pursue carpentry or renovation programs in other parts of the province.”
“We know that there is pent-up demand for this program in the North, and we already have excellent shop facilities and experienced faculty,” she added, “so we’re very excited to invite students to join us for the carpentry renovation techniques program beginning this fall.”
Over 36 weeks, students will study areas such as building codes, residential estimating, framing and layout, woodworking, welding and rigging. The resulting certificate will prepare graduates for a career in construction or home renovations.
The program will be offered pending approval by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
