Derek Johnston, who competed in the heavy equipment service category, and Mike Miller, who competed in the industrial mechanical millwright category, earned silver medals for their efforts. This year marks the first time a millwright student from Cambrian entered the competition.

“These medals of distinction reinforce the fact that Cambrian’s skilled trades programs are among the best in Canada,” said Michel Barbeau, dean of Cambrian’s school of skills training and community and corporate learning, in a news release.

Roughly 1,900 competitors in more than 60 skilled trade areas participated in the three-day event, which was held April 30 to May 2 at RIM Park in Kitchener-Waterloo. Cambrian sent 10 competitors from welding, millwright, heavy equipment and computer systems technology.

Winners from the Ontario championships advance to the national competition. Last year, Cambrian students earned gold and silver medals in information technology and bronze in welding.
