Cambrian College in Sudbury is introducing a new information systems business analyst program to address a shortage in the industry.
The one-year graduate certificate program will be available online and in class starting in September 2013, and will be geared to those with a background in information technology and business. Students will complete a work placement as part of the program.
“This new program addresses a Canada-wide shortage of IT experts who have a strong understanding of business needs and practices,” said Joan Campbell, dean of the School of Engineering and Information Technology, in a news release. “Information systems business analysts (also called business analysts or BAs) provide strategies to increase efficiencies and project success rates through technology. They’re becoming indispensable assets in private and public sector organizations and industries that rely heavily on computer systems to function.”
According to Canada’s Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), employers are increasingly looking for experienced IT professionals who understand business needs and processes and also possess strong “soft skills” such as teamwork and interpersonal communication, notes the release. The ICTC estimates that Canadian employers will need to hire 170,000 business analysts by 2016.
The information systems business analyst program is only the second of its kind in Ontario, and the only one offered in the North.
