Cambrian cuts nine programs from mandate

Cambrian College has suspended nine programs from its list of offerings, citing low enrolment levels, high delivery costs, and the need to reinvest in program areas that are experiencing increased demand.

The college's board of governors voted in favour of the changes March 22.

Affected programs include welder fitter, instrumentation engineering technology, chef training, baking and pastry arts, hotel and restaurant management, journalism, building bridges, transition to college and college vocational.

Only the public relations and public relations graduate certificate programs, which were considered for suspension, were spared. They will be moved to the school of business.

“Change is always difficult, but as an organization, we need to continually reinvent ourselves and make responsible choices to ensure our long-term success and sustainability,” Cambrian president Sylvia Barnard said in a news release. “By making these changes, Cambrian will be able to invest more resources into program areas where we are anticipating long-term demand.

Barnard said students currently enrolled in affected programs won't notice any changes, and will complete their program of study and graduate as planned. Students who have recently applied will be contacted and encouraged to choose another program at Cambrian instead.

Cambrian will offer new programs in business aviation and wind turbine technician. New online courses will also be available across several other program areas, adding more study options for students.

All changes are effective September 2012.
