A rise in institutional construction in Ontario helped lead a 6.5 per cent surge in the value of Canadian building permits in June, reaching $6.6 billion, according to Statistics Canada.

This number marks a 24.9 per cent rise over June 2009.

The non-residential sector saw a 23.5 per cent increase from May to hit $3 billion in June, largely a result of higher commercial and institutional construction in Ontario.

Permits worth $1.5 billion were issued for commercial projects in June, up 39 per cent from the previous month, primarily due to more plans for hotels, restaurants and conference centres in Ontario. Institutional permits worth $966 million were issued, up 41.7 per cent from May.

Permits for single-family homes dropped for the third consecutive month, dropping 8.3 per cent to $2.2 billion, with decreases in all provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador.
