Sault Ste. Marie's Boniferro Mill Works has received FSC Chain-of-Custody certification.
The SmartWood Program of the Rainforest Alliance has certified the hardwood mill for Forest Stewardship Council wood standards.
In a Nov. 6 statement, company president Jim Boniferro said FSC is the “benchmark” in environmental sustainability and social responsibility in forest management.
“This certification will allow us to better serve and support all our customers in the very demanding forest industry marketplace.”
The 48-person company produces 12-million board feet annually of hardwood lumber for the furniture and cabinet sector in the U.S. market.
Mike Thompson, Boniferro's vice-president of woodlands, said the certification strengthens the six-year-old company's commitment to sustainability “in all areas of our business from our logging contractors, to our suppliers, our lumber customers, and users of our newly certified by-products.”
Thompson said despite challenging times in the forestry market, this certification provides a “credible guarantee” to customers that Boniferro's products originate from “well-managed, controlled sources.”
The company said the announcement builds on the FSC certification obtained by Clergue Forest Management for the Algoma Forest, where Boniferro is a stakeholder.
