S.&T. Group celebrates 35 years of success and 1 million man-hours without lost-time incident

2019 ushered in significant milestones for S.&T. Group, a multi-trade contracting company in Sault Ste. Marie.
August 2019 marks 35 years in business for Andrew Sarlo and Dennis Tatasciore, co-owners and VP’s of S.&T. Group. Established in 1984, S.&T. Group, legally known as S.&T. Electrical Contractors Limited, originated as an electrical contracting and service company in Sault Ste. Marie. Over the years, S.&T. has expanded its operations to become a full-service, multi-trade company serving residential, commercial, institutional and industrial customers across Ontario. Their services include, but are not limited to, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, technologies and general contracting.

When asked to what they attribute their success, Sarlo and Tatasciore shared praises of their skilled and committed team and their ability to adapt to changes in the market which paved the way for innovative business opportunities. “It started as the classic story of 2 guys and a truck, and to see how things have grown over the years is unbelievable,” says Dennis Tatasciore, V.P of Operations and Estimating. “Obviously there is always the goal to grow and advance, but to look back and see how far we have come is humbling.”

Currently, S.&T. operates three separate entities across Northern Ontario and Michigan, including S.&T. Group in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury, S.&T. Industrial Inc. (est. 2013) which provides ongoing maintenance to Algoma Steel and S.&T. Electrical International (est. 1998), an electrical contracting company serving customers in Northern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula and the Mid-Western United States.

“We are proud to have a team of experts on staff who have the experience and knowledge to contribute to the success of our company. Our team is built of multidisciplined tradespeople, supervisors, coordinators, estimators, purchasers and administrative staff. Cooperatively, we work together to meet and exceed customer needs by providing quality service on time and within budget to the best of our ability,” Tatasciore praises.

S.&T.’s operations now stretch across Ontario, manning projects to the North in Thunder Bay and Dubreuilville and South in Sarnia, Windsor and Brockville, to name a few. They have expanded their skillset to meet the needs of new emerging industries, including energy battery storage. As the primary electrical contractor for Convergent Energy + Power LP, a company specializing in providing innovative, first-of-its-kind energy storage solutions across North America, S.&T. has completed four energy storage facilities since 2016 and are in the process of completing three more in the next three months.

Additionally, S.&T. is proud to have been the general contractor for the renovation and efficiency upgrades of Shingwauk Hall at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie. This was a 17 month project which was completed in May 2019 and incorporated multidisciplinary trades, supplied both in-house by S.&T. and subcontracted to local companies. This building is now the home to the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre which showcases the history and testimonies of Residential Schools in Canada in an attempt to educate others on this important piece of Canadian history. It is a monumental facility, both to the university and to the Algoma community, which now has been reclaimed and preserved for years to come.

Another milestone S.&T. Group celebrated this year was the achievement of over one million man hours without a lost time incident. This is the second time S.&T. has accomplished this target since its inception in 1984. “It is with great pride that we celebrate this achievement,” says Andrew Sarlo, VP of Construction & Service at S.&T. Group. “This milestone could not be achieved by one or two people alone, so we really want to focus on our great team who cooperatively maintain a strong culture of health and safety each and every day. It is through their efforts that we have successfully exceeded one million man hours yet again without any lost time injuries. We thank our dedicated workers for their ongoing commitment to safety”.

It is evident that over the past 35 years S.&T. Group has experienced great success. They continue to be a leading multi-trade company in Northern Ontario and have successfully maintained a competitive position across Ontario. Since the beginning, S.&T. Group has taken pride in providing high-quality products and services to its customers. As they look to the future, they want to continue to be the contractor of choice, both locally and provincially, as they serve their customers with a strong commitment to excellence.
