John Larche, the co-founder of the Hemlo gold deposit, has been nominated for the Order of Canada. The list became official in early July when Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson announced a list of 99 Canadians up for the award. The awards ceremony has not been set, but will likely occur late this year, or in early 2003.

Larche will be joined by the likes of singers Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn.

The dedicated community volunteer donated and helped fundraise more than $2.5 million toward the new Timmins and District Hospital over the years, including money for a new magnetic resonance imaging machine. A local nomination led to the award application.
