Declining population base prompts concerns (3/02)

Northwestern Ontario mayors are concerned about a declining population base in the region, and are looking at ways to combat the problem. Statistics Canada's 2001 census revealed that only Sioux Lookout reported an increase in population among northwest communities.

Some areas where decline in population was witnessed include: Thunder Bay, declining by 4.1 per cent; Schreiber, by 19 per cent; Terrace Bay by 16.1 per cent; and Greenstone 13.3 per cent.

Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boshcoff says the population drops may require "a new northern initiative," such as incentives for new immigrants to locate in Northern Ontario.
