Marathon’s former economic development manager has been appointed as the new chief administrative officer of the North Shore municipality.

Daryl Skworchinski is leaving his position as Confederation College’s director of its eastern campuses to start his new position on Oct. 27.

He replaces Brian Tocheri who departed in August to a similar position in Hanover.

“It’s certainly an opportunity to be one of the leaders of my hometown,” said Skworchinski, who recalled the arrival of his grandfather’s arrival from Italy in the community many years ago.

Skworchinski said he’s energized by the challenge of leading Marathon through some difficult times with the stalemate in development of Stillwater Mining’s PGM property, a mine closure at the Hemlo complex and is getting the local forest industry back on track.

He will continue in his role as chairman of the Nawiinginokiima Forest Management Corporation, a new provincial agency tasked with harvesting and marketing Crown wood fibre along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

“I’m never one to shy away from a challenge so I think the hometown pull at the end of the day made the decision.”
