In what is being heralded by area politicians as a major step in waterfront development in Little Current, the long-awaited transfer of some federal docks was expected to take place in mid-April. The waterfront properties included the docks at Little Current, Rockville and Honora Bay in northeastern Manitoulin Island in the Town of NEMI (Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands). The town had leased the docks from the federal Small Crafts and Harbours branch of the Ministry of Fisheries and Harbours. A private contractor runs the docks for the town. A sizeable funding commitment from the ministry was expected to accompany the transfer. The town hopes to leverage that money to secure funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and FedNor to develop the downtown waterfront.
